Avs defenceman Cale Makar got victimized with a pretty bad hit to his head by Penguins forward Jeff Carter. Unfortunately, the league didn’t call upon Jeff, or hand over suspension or penalty following his “blindside” attack.
Makar, who is very well known for his attitude in NHL, ripped the officials for their call on his hit. Fans joined him on social media, supporting the defenceman and waiting for the league to make the right call. No penalty was given as the league agreed with the official’s stance, calling it an accidental hit rather than an intensional crash.
Cale Makar lay on the ice for a brief moment before stumbling to the bench, later following the concussion protocol. Jeff Carter’s shoulder hit Makar’s head near the Avs net. The officials called on a late whistle giving the defenceman time to collect himself back on the bench.

The Penguins won the game 2-1 as Makar spoke about his collision post-game, “Pretty blindside”. “The ref said apparently we ran into each other, but I don’t know how that’s possible. He was coming down the ice.”
Avs coach Jared Bednar clearly stated his disappointment with the league’s call as he commented, “He skated right through his head. That’s what I saw”. Fans are also pretty upset about the whole situation.
Following the end of regular-season, the teams will be heading to Stanley Cup Playoffs, so having one of their star players on IR is not a pretty situation right now. Thankfully medical report showed that Makar can go back into action, but the scene on ice stunned everyone.
He even slid during the NHL All-Star Skills Competition which horrified Mackinnon and Mikko Rantanen. Having his head hurt or being placed on the injured list will hurt the roster of the reigning Stanley Cup Champions.
The Colorado Avalanche was leading in the starting moments of the game as Nathan Mackinnon buried a goal in the Pens’ net. The tide of the game changed as the Penguins took advantage of Avs goalie Pavel Francouz chasing after an abandoned puck to get beaten to it by Pens forward Bryan Rust.
Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith also performed excellently as he made 41 out of 42 saves. Bednar commented on the game, “I liked our game tonight”. “We checked hard. We were dangerous on the offensive side of it. I thought their goalie had a really good night, and or, we didn’t shoot the puck well.”
“I felt like we missed the net on a few opportunities. Especially in overtime.” Mackinnon said, “Everyone was playing hard. It wasn’t a lack of effort tonight, which is good. I thought overall we played a pretty good game.”
