John Carlson is an American professional ice hockey player for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League. He plays in the position of defenceman and as the alternate captain for the team. After spending a year with the United States Hockey League with the Indiana Ice, he was chosen the 27th overall by the Capitals in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to his NHL career, he was part of the Ontario Hockey League with the London Knights and also played professional hockey as an affiliate to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Carlson also participated in the 2010 and 2014 World Junior Championships and in the Winter Olympics respectively.
