Apparently, prior to the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins match, Mathieu and Pierre-Oliver Joseph’s mother France told her sons not to fight each other on the ice. Through the third round of the match, a different picture was drawn.

Both brothers have been on the NHL ice for 3 years but never got the chance to compete against one another until this week. On Friday night both the Joseph brothers got penalized for high sticking as their parents shrugged off in disbelief.

It was considered as one of the best and funniest moments in the NHL regular season. Senators forward Mathieu who is 2 years older than Penguins defenceman Pierre-Oliver got drafted into the NHL 2 years apart. They knew they would compete against one another sometime in the future, but didn’t expect it to be on Friday.

On Wednesday, there was a good chance of clashing, but Senators ruled Mathieu as a healthy scratch. Though it was disappointing, it must have been leading toward Friday’s game. The Penguins dusted off the Senators in a 4-1 win, but the match meant a lot more for the brothers.

It was their dream come true to compete against each other under the NHL spotlight. Mathieu noted, “It’s a dream come true for both of us to be able to play on the same ice at the same time at this level . I’m sure my parents are proud.”

During the third period of the game, Pierre-Oliver delivered a blow to Mathieu’s face who returned the favor with a shot of his own. During their little squabble, the officials penalized both of them for 2 minutes from the game. They went towards the box grinning and nodding in at each other.

On Tuesday, Pierre-Oliver commented, “We always get penalties against each other. We love each other before the game, then hate each other after the game because we just compete against each other so hard.” Their parents Franzi and France who were in attendance saw the boys grinning toward the penalty box.

They both laughed in disbelief at what happened. During post-game Mathieu said, “I’m sure my parents had a good laugh about it, but I didn’t think it was funny”. “I’m just going to talk about this once”. “This was an internal thing.”

“I made a mistake and I’m ready to assume the consequences of it. This is on me, and it’s my responsibility. I know I can be better and I will.” Mathieu who won 2 Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021, recorded 9 points in 25 games, missing the rest of it due to a lower-body injury since December 12.

Pierre-Oliver on the other hand has shown stable performance throughout the season, scoring 12 points in 40 games. He maintained quite a balance between defensive play and point collection. In 2017 he was chosen by the Arizona Coyotes, later signing with the Penguins in 2019.
