Justin Thomas recently shared a hilarious Sidney Crosby story where the golfer and his group declared war on the Penguins at a restaurant in South Carolina. Although the meeting was a coincidence, the prank war that started surely wasn’t.
The waiter who got sandwiched between the war groups surely will have a tale to tell for decades. It all started when Justin Thomas, Jordan Speith, Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman, and their wives met Crosby and his group at the restaurant Palmetto Bluff.
Thomas is a huge hockey fan, and too of the Penguins couldn’t leave the chance to chat up with one of hockey’s greatest players. The golfers were celebrating the last evening of the post-Masters vacation whereas, Crosby and his teammates were traveling on a postseason golf trip.

Pro-golfer Justin Thomas recalls the eventful incidents of the evening during a podcast episode on ‘The Smylie Show’. He starts with what he said after returning to his table following a chat with Sidney Crosby and his teammates, “boys, it looks like we’ve got a night ahead of us”.
Whether it was Thomas’ keen prediction or not, his words surely came true that evening. Crosby sent a bottle of wine over to Thomas’ table as a kind gesture, but the golfers being excellent pranksters drew a totally different response. It was a full-on war to snatch the title of the ‘best prankster’ award that night.
With a laugh, Thomas said, “You could just see our minds churning with our immatureness of how we were going to respond”. The waiter who stood at the side to maybe deliver some words, message, or a gesture to Crosby’s table, soon became involved with the prankster celebrities.
Thomas asked for a Caesar salad and the waiter went back to Sid’s table with a plate decked with a piece of lettuce and a crouton for every Pens member, including Jake Guentzel who was present there at the moment. Not to be outdone, the Pens sent over a tray of what looked like tequila shots with lime and salt rimmed on top.
Thomas exclaimed, “We’re like, this is a warm tequila shot! We just feel the glass, and everybody is just like, petrified to smell this thing, let alone try it”. Suddenly one of them screamed, “It’s water!” “Those hockey guys are witty. So, it was good fun, for sure,” Thomas said following their back-and-forth war.
But the night was yet to be over. Both parties stayed nearly close to each other at their rented house, and they went on to join in for some flip cup game. Thomas happily partnered up with Crosby, but the spotlight was stolen by Kaufman who won the battle.
