The NHL suspended New York Rangers defenceman K’Andre Miller for 3 games on Tuesday. Following the spitting incident with Los Angeles Kings Drew Doughty, things took an ugly turn. Within the first period of the game, the Rangers defenceman got ejected by the NHL officials who called on match penalty at 16.37 minutes.
The NHL Department of Player Safety declared the suspension after speaking with Miller following his game ejection. According to his suspension, the defenceman will be missing games against the Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, and one of the top NHL teams the Boston Bruins.
Furthermore, Miller will be paying $15K for his actions, noting back to the 2019 spitting incident on-ice. In 2019 a similar incident took place between the Capitals forward Garent Hathway and Ducks defenceman Erik Gudbranson.
K’Andre Miller feels sorry for his actions against Drew Doughty
In the 2019 case, the Washington Capitals forward Garent Hathway spat on Anaheim Ducks defenceman Erik Gudbranson intentionally. He was later ejected from the game and had to undergo the same consequences as New York Rangers K’Andre Miller.
During the game between the Rangers and LA Kings, the former was down to four defencemen after Miller got ejected. Even then the team was pulled through winning the game 5-2. Drew Doughty was very furious about the incident and didn’t shy away from blatantly stating his thoughts.
While speaking with the reporters post-game, Drew Doughty said, “Whether or not he meant to do that, I don’t know”. “It was a pretty big loogie on my face, so I was pretty pissed”. During and even after the game Miller stated that he didn’t mean to do it and that it was a part of an accident.
Rangers coach Gerant Gallant told reporters, “The kid feels bad about it. He said it was an accident.”. Miller commented, “I would never intend to do something like that on purpose”. “It goes against everything I am as a person and player. I felt awful about it.”
“I have all the respect in the world for Drew Doughty and what happened was completely accidental”. “I would never intend to do something like that on purpose, it goes against everything I am as a person and player.”
“I felt awful about it and I am thankful Drew gave me the opportunity to apologize and explain myself in person after the game.” Unfortunately, it isn’t an incident Doughty is willing to forget anytime soon, and neither are his fans.
The fans took to social media to express their anger at the incident. One commented, ‘how do you spit on someone by accident’, while others seemed to take a soft touch on the matter, willing to spare Miller a bit. Though this is not a celebratory event for the Rangers, the team got another big news incoming.
Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks has finally taken the leap of going to Broadway. The three-way deal was finalized not too long ago. Miller’s suspension noise will be buried under the organization’s blockbuster deal. Hopefully the forward will play against the Flyers as a Rangers in their upcoming match.
