Kent Johnson leads Canada to World Juniors victory

On Saturday night, Columbus Blue Jackets forward left wing Kent Johnson snatched the gold medal for Canada as the game went into OT. Johnson made 42 shots on goal in World Juniors, the most that anyone made in the tournament.

The 19-year-old went into 3:20 on 3-3 extra time, which gave Canada the walk-off win over Finland in the finals. This tournament was canceled previously due to COVID 19 safety measures and was rescheduled to August, which allowed many players to be in the limelight, even after turning 20.

Johnson was selected by the Blue Jackets in the 2021 NHL Draft in the first round as the 5 overall. In 7 games he finished in a 3-6-9 line and became one of the event’s top offensive players.

His lacrosse-style Michigan goal in the preliminary round is considered one of the best tallies in the history of the tournament, and his playstyle simultaneously earned him the gold medal for his country, which he will always remember. Not only did he win the game, but he also got complimented on his victory by his favorite player Johnny Gaudreau.

After Canada won its 19th World Juniors gold, Johnson commented, as per nhl.com, “Stanks made a nice play and got it to my backhand”. “I tried to go five-hole, and that didn’t work, but I got the rebound. It was super exciting. I actually thought I would score. I love three-on-three. This gold means the world to us.”

During his NHL debut with Blue Jackets, he made 3 assists in 9 games, and apart from his recent glory, he also participated in the 2022 Winter Olympics and the IIHF World Championships. Next month he will be starting at the team’s developmental camp. It was Johnson’s quick stuffed rebound that earned Canada its goal this year.
