NFL star Kyler Murray started the New Year in full-on trolling mode as he donned a Sidney Crosby jersey on Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. NHL star Sidney Crosby, often known as ‘The Chosen One’, is notorious in Philadelphia due to his winning streaks accumulated in their home base.

Murray took this opportunity to utilize Crosby’s notorious fame in quite a fan-loving way to tease Philly fans ahead of the Eagles-Cardinals game. In the video, it was captured how the quarterback proudly showed off No.87 while strolling down the aisle. Crosby is considered one of the most hated athletes or the ultimate villain by Philadelphia fans for valid reasons.

The Penguins and Philadelphia rivalry has been going on for ages, and the greatest has been on the white sheet as Crosby time and again scored goals and wins on their platform. Murray’s choice of attire ahead of the game may have just sparked the flames once again as the Cardinals won 35-31 against the Eagles.

How did Sidney Crosby gain his title as the ultimate villain of Philadelphia?

Talking about how Sidney Crosby became Philadelphia’s ultimate villain, it’s best to trace it back to November 16, 2005. It was Crosby’s official introduction to the Pens-Philly rivalry and it ended with Crosby losing two of his teeth while also scoring the OT on Broad Street.

There’s nothing that can unite the Philly fans other than Crosby stepping feet on their ice or when their team plays against one another. In 2005, former NHL defenceman Derian Hatcher gave a strong not-so-welcome slap to Crosby at the then-Wachovia Center. 

The high stick to his mouth knocked out two of his teeth which he later complained about to the referees. His complaint was seen as an unsportsmanlike gesture that handed him a good old penalty. To put the cherry on top, he scored the OT winner ultimately trolling the Philly in his first game.

In records, Crosby has netted more scores against Philadelphia than compared to other teams he has ever played against. Furthermore, the NHL world will never miss Philly’s booing No.87 whenever he takes the ice during the games, especially if he fumbles a shot or the team loses against the Pens.

Sidney Crosby once stated that he “doesn’t like them”. He further added, “I don’t like any guy on their team.” His comments further fired up the Philly fans. He also complained that the Wells Fargo Center has a vicious atmosphere and it’s not a fun place to play in.

Although Philly fans booing Crosby has been going on for a long time, it’s mostly because he’s on the other side of the arena. If Crosby ever had the chance to debut in their orange-black jersey things would have been different. But what’s a game without some old rivalry mixed in? As the 2023-24 continues, NHL fans are waiting to see if they get another chance to witness the Pens-Flyers rivalry on the ice.
