Young ice hockey centre Linus Karlsson surpassed the rookie goal-scoring record set by Elias Pettersson in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) last season. The Vancouver Canucks forward prospect now looks confident to translate the similar success in North America this season.

The 6-foot-1, 178 pounds Karlsson was named SHL rookie of the year after he had 46 points in 52 games for the Skelleftea AIK, including 26 goals in 44 games in 2017-18.

“I scored some goals so, of course, I got some confidence, and I will try to bring it over,” Karlsson said during Canucks development camp, which was held from July 10-15, as quoted by NHL.com. “I will score goals and take the puck to the net, but it’s going to be hard. I will work on it every day and look at videos to improve my game and we’ll see, hopefully, I score some goals over here too.”

The 22-year-old Karlsson, who ended up scoring two goals in a final-day scrimmage at the camp, was earlier drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the third round (No. 87) of the 2018 NHL Draft. However, he was then traded to the Canucks in February 2019, for forward Jonathan Dahlen. The Landsbro native Karlsson is now expected to start the season with the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League (AHL).

It hasn’t been easy at all,” Karlsson said. “It’s been a tough way, but I’m proud of that way and I still have a bit to go. I want to play in the NHL so I’m going to work on the same things I’ve done up to now and try to do everything better.”
