Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner is out from the upcoming 2022-23 NHL season with a hip injury that will require undergoing surgery. Till his return, Logan Thompson may be starting with the team as their No. 1 goalie this season.

On Thursday, coach Bruce Cassidy noted, “It’s his job to lose, obviously, because he’s been here the most, especially if [backup goalie Laurent] Brossoit is not ready”. “And then we’ll have the next guys behind him ready to go because you can’t play every night in this league; I don’t believe that. And so that’s how we’re going to handle Logan and hopefully, he’s up to the task.”

Last season the 29-year-old had a score of 10-5-3 with 2.68 goals against average, a .914 save percentage, and a shutout in 19 games with the Golden Knights. Other than Thompson, the Golden Knights also have Laurent Brossoit, though he may not be ready for the season after undergoing a medical procedure for an undisclosed injury after March 15.

It can be said that Michael Hutchinson will likely be acting as Thompson’s backup player. General manager Kelly McCrimmon said that Lehner has likely undergone his hip surgery but will have to prepare for a second one at a future date, “There’s a 10-week lag in between the two surgeries”. Last season Thompson played 6 out of 7 final games.

Forward Jack Eichel noted about Thompson, “‘LT,’ he was huge for us to down the stretch”. “We were dealing with some injuries and he had a lot of responsibility and he was called upon, back-to-back situations and a lot of different places. So I give him a ton of credit for the way that he stepped up for our group. I think he earned a lot of respect from the guys in the locker room last year by the way he played, and we have a lot of faith in LT as our goalie.”
