“Our core is just great” – Defenceman MacKenzie Weegar boldly claims Calgary to be better team than Panthers

Defenceman MacKenzie Weegar stated that the Calgary Flames is a far better team than his previous organization, the Florida Panthers. It may be coming from his personal experience as the Panthers did trade him to his current team to acquire Matthew Tkachuk on July 22.

But it’s also important to note that it’s not only Weegar who joined the Flames but also two major NHL players, center Nazem Kadri and winger Jonathan Huberdeau. The fans are bound to be excited for this trio being in the top roster line for the next season.

They became the bonafide superplayers who are the key to the team’s new rebuild. Last season the Panthers stood with a record of 58-18-6, winning the President’s Trophy which is awarded to the team with the best record. On contrary, Flames won the Pacific Division.

Unfortunately, they were whipped out by the Edmonton Oilers in 5 games in the Western Conference 2nd round of the playoffs. Soon after they lost two of their crucial players, Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. Gaudreau recorded a score of 115 points, 40 goals, and 75 assists, while Tkachuk had 104 points with 42 goals and 62 assists.

During Flames Charity Golf Classic on Wednesday, Weegar noted, “It’s going to be really exciting”. “Obviously, coming from Florida on a good team and then coming here now, I’d say we’re a better team than Florida is. It’s going to be really exciting.”

He further said, “I think a lot of people have come up to me in the city, a lot of fans and stuff that they’re really excited for this season and [Jonathan Huberdeau] and I and [Nazem Kadri] and a couple of new faces here. It’s going to be a good season, and I’m excited just as much as they are.”

Huberdeau stated, “You look at our [defenseman] core, is just great. We have a big team, a great goalie, two goalies actually (Jacob Markstrom, Dan Vladar). The forwards too, we added ‘Naz,’ too. I think we have a great top six. … I’m excited to see what we’re going to do, but I think this year we can believe and go get a Stanley Cup right away.”

Both Weegar and Huberdeau commented on their new team, and so did Kadri. According to him, “[Coach Darryl Sutter and I have] spoke several times, and I can just tell by his attitude he’s got a winning mentality, and I think that’s what winning’s all about is your mentality and how you think the game and how you process it.”
