Makar’s ‘great’ game at runner-up after McDavid in the race for Hart Trophy

Makar’s ‘great’ game at runner-up after McDavid in the race for Hart Trophy

Cale Makar

Cale Makar, One of the Colorado Avalanche defensemen is second in line to win the Hart Trophy. Makar had secured the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year, only in 2019-20 as opposed to the scenario now, where Makar ‘the great’ is being applauded for his heart in the game.

The Norris Trophy 2020-2021 was just missed by Cale securing second place again, but the days of him getting defeated seem to be behind him after his Norris victory in the last season. What’s interesting here is the player’s pursuit to now move forward from second place to the top.

But why is Cale stuck at second for the Hart Trophy, even after his big wins in the Norris race and the Conn Smythe Trophy gained by him unanimously for being the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Playoffs? The Avalanche won the Stanley Cup and with it, he got his value written in gold.

Cale has been in the race, but not at the top due to one main reason- ‘being underrated’. NHL.com recently questioned each NHL North American Player Media Tour in Las Vegas last month about the most underappreciated player.
While there was an array of replies, a few chose Makar, including Kuemper. “When we won the Cup, he was unbelievable for us,” Kuemper said.

“Everyone knows how good he is, but I think he is still underrated,” Kuemper added while also clarifying that he surely was talking about the Conn Smythe and Norris Trophy winners. Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon picked Cale as well, stating, “I’ll go with Cale, I think Cale is going to have a great year. I think it’s hard for [defensemen] to win that award, but if someone can, it’s him.”

Undoubtedly Cale Makar is in great form and has the right mindset. He himself said, “Coming into this season, you can’t lose grasp of that confidence,” also being an asset for the Avalanche team when it comes to speaking up. It is only a matter of time before the defenseman explores his greatness up to his full potential and tops the charts.
