Future Hall of Famer Marc-Andre Fleury may be retiring following Minnesota Wild’s miserable loss against Dallas Stars in the 1st-round Stanley Cup Playoff season. Not only the fans, but the whole Wild organization is fuming over their consecutive loss to gain an advantage for 2nd round qualification since 2015.
Needless the say, the most depressed are the players themselves. Fleury’s contract with the team will last till the 2023-24 season and this may also be his final year as a professional player. His news sent shockwaves throughout the NHL world when he stated, “that might be it”.
Although it is yet to be seen what the future unfolds, his declaration cannot be taken softly. Players like Ryan Hartman, Jared Spurgeon, and Marcus Foligno beat themselves up considering their 3-1 loss against the Stars.
March-Andre Fleury voices extreme disappointment after Wilds fail to secure win against Stars
Yet again the Wilds have magnificently failed to live up to the hopes of the fans, and they made sure their feelings vibrated all across the arena on Friday. Fleury is sure to end his career on a high note, currently living up to a record of 24-16-4.
Marc-Andre Fleury sits only 7 wins 2nd in NHL history behind Patrick Roy. Currently, the Wilds’ star goalie is 15 games shy of marking his 1,000 career games with 544 career wins as of now. He himself admits that he didn’t deliver his best in the ongoing playoff season as his partner Filip Gustavsson did.
The proud Stanley Cup winner who usually pulls out pranks and is undeniably an NHL favorite character may be out of the league by next year. In the latest Wild vs Stars game, Jake Oettinger really popped off along with Roope Hintz’s nasty goal leading to the Stars’ victory.
Ryan Hartman commented he felt like “sh*t” saying he’s “sick to my stomach” about the loss. Captain Jared Spurgeon said that everything just “sucks in general”. Marcus Foligno also admitted that it’s a “brutal feeling” and even after grinding all throughout the season they couldn’t “get out of the first round again”. He labels it as a “broken record”.
This may just bring out a feeling of deja vu for the Wilds fan who are used to seeing the team walk out of the playoffs in the past couple of years. Hartman said that the city and its fans deserve better than what they’ve been served, but ultimately they failed to respond to their wishes.
Although questionable NHL calls were made against the team, the players also failed to capitalize on the weak spots of the Stars. Hartman states, “There’s opportunities throughout this series where we could have not necessarily put the nail in the coffin, but we could have separated ourselves a little bit more”. “…We failed to capitalize on [those] opportunities.”
