‘I love it here’ – Mathew Barzal signs an 8-year extension with the New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal signed an eight-year contract extension for which the details and the financials were not made public. He was in the final year of his previous three-year contract with the Islanders. He would have become RFA at the end of this season.

Picked in the 2015 Draft of the NHL, Barzal has made himself a regular starter for the Islanders. He amassed 91 goals bringing him 311 points. He also played well in Stanley Cup with 35 points to his name in a total of 49 Playoff games. Barzal won the NHL rookie of the year in 2017-18 season.

Mathew Barzal shared his emotions as he said that he didn’t even think of playing for some other team. He hinted that contract extension was always the preferred route for him. “I love it here. I genuinely do, I think that anyone who plays here knows that it’s one of the top places to play in the League.”

“I just love it here and never had any talks with anyone about going anywhere else, doing anything else, playing this year out. It was about wanting to get signed, wanting to commit to the boys and this organization”. Playing forward for the New York Islanders, Mathew Barzal squared off with Brock Nelson in terms of points- 59 to be precise.

Louis P. Lamoriello,  general manager for the New York Islanders was keen on drafting up a contract for Mathew before the season starts for the Islanders on the 13th of October. Lamoriello believes that Barzal only can improve from here on as he rates the NHL star as a future great of the game.
