The fighting and beating down opponents in the NHL continues. The league has now fined New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal $5,000 for hitting Tony DeAngelo. The incident occurred during the recent game between the Islanders and the Carolina Hurricanes.
The New York side had an outing to forget as they blew a three-goal lead and lost 4-3 to the Hurricanes in overtime. Seemed frustrated by the performance of his team, Barzal got into trouble with DeAngelo. He would proceed to high-stick the Hurricanes defenceman in the second period.
At a time when the league is being closely monitored for the safety of players following the death of Adam Johnson, the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) took a massive step. They imposed the maximum allowed fine under the CBA against Barzal.
Whether it was intentional or unintentional is subjected to debate, Barzal was given a two-minute suspension for his actions. This is now the fourth time he has been fined by the NHLPA for his actions on the ice field. However, the fans seem to be on his side as they trolled DeAngelo and the organization on social media for this incident. Take a look at how this incident took place through a video shared on X:
Social media reactions towards fine of Mathew Barzal following hit on Tony DeAngelo
The name Tony DeAngelo is something that has not been very popular among fans. Multiple times, the fans have called him out for his actions on the playing field. So, when he was on the receiving end of a high stick, the users on social media did not let this chance slip by. Despite being the victim in this case, he was laughed at and trolled.
Another reason why he was trolled and mocked was because of his past relationships. He had appeared for the Philadelphia Flyers and the Islanders’ city rivals – the New York Rangers. All of this meant there was some bad blood between them. One user while reacting to this incident wrote, “Should be getting paid for that,”. Take a look at that and other reactions from X regarding this matter below:
While the fans enjoyed their booing and trolling of the Hurricanes defender, it is safe to say he had the last laugh. This win moved the Hurricanes above their opponents at third in the Metropolitan Division.
The Hurricanes would be hoping to build a winning run and continue their form as they take on the Buffalo Sabres next time out. The Islanders on the other side will have to better be in their defence when they face the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.
