Buffalo Sabres defenseman Mattias Samuelsson has been declared to be on leave until completion of surgery and rehabilitation. He has not played since January 23 when the team lost to Anaheim Ducks. Sabres players who came back from the NHL All-Star game learned that they’ll be without their defenseman due to the lasting effects of an upper-body injury.
Injuries have been a recurring theme for the team, especially for Samuelsson, who has been suffering from nagging injuries all the season. His latest injury was during the team’s game against the Ducks. The Sabres will be playing without Samuelsson, Jack Quinn (lower-body injury), Tage Thompson (out of lineup for three weeks), Alex Tuch, and Jeff Skinner.
Fans have both wished good luck to the 23-year-old and also labeled him as a “glass man” who easily gets injured every so often. One X user noted, “The Sabres need to trade him. He is always hurt. Drop the dead weight and bring in someone new.” While another noted, “The glass man broke again!”. The team will now be without two of their top young players as they aim for a 2024 Stanley Cup spot.
Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato confident in team despite absence of Mattias Samuelsson
With Mattias Samuelsson out of the season for an indefinite amount of time, the team will miss one of the top players. They are already 10 points out of the wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Despite their last season’s 9-15-3 record, head coach Don Granato is confident they can do well in the remainder of regular season games.
During the offseason, the Sabres acquired NHL veterans Erik Johnson and Connor Clifton. Rookie Ryan Johnson has also produced promising results on the team’s blue line. Granato said,
It’s unfortunate when you lose guys like that. You look at it and you say, ‘Are the other guys ready to seize the opportunity?’ Because there’s new opportunity. I feel we have guys in a better position to do that.Don Granato as per The Athletic.

Samuelsson’s absence from the lineup will test the Sabres’ depth as they prepare to face strong opponents for Stanley Cup contention. Granato further added that although “those are key guys” the other players “are going to have to step up…to pick up the slack for missing these guys.”
