Following Thursday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals, forward Max Domi reflected on facing against Alex Ovechkin. He along with other players and coach Sheldon Keefe praised ‘The Great Eight’ for his dominant play on ice despite the Caps’ 3-7 defeat against the Leafs.

Domi described playing against Ovechkin as a “special” experience, saying it’s “crazy” to think Ovie can break ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky’s record in the future. He labeled him as the “greatest goal scorer of all time,” while adding Auston Matthews as Greztky’s next goal-chaser.

It’s really special for guys like us to be able to play on the same ice surface…it’s great to see them go head to head like that.

Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe couldn’t help but smile and praise Ovie for his “world-class” performance on the ice all throughout regular season games. He admitted that the team’s defensive corner can get some work to stop Ovie’s shots as his lethal puck drops have been hard to stop by their goalie.

Alex Ovechkin only 48 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal records

Alex Ovechkin has been chasing after Wayne Gretzky’s record for a long time, and finally, the Washington Capitals captain is 48 goals away. Gretzky scored 894 goals in NHL regular season, thus holding the crown for a long time. Ovie scored his 846th goal against the Hurricanes in the team’s 7-3 shootout victory.

After Ovechkin crossed the 800-goal limit, Gretzky praised him saying “it couldn’t happen to a better person” as he continued to chase ‘The Great One’s record to set his own new NHL all-time score. Gretzky added how Ovie’s goal-finding skill is comparable to Mike Bossy and Brett Hull. He added, “they don’t miss the net and they knew to find that open area.”

In a recent interview, Leafs captain Auston Matthews also lauded Ovechkin, labeling him “the greatest goal-scorer of all-time.” The Capitals are now gearing up to face off against the Carolina Hurricanes, as Ovie paves his chances to get further closer to Gretzky’s record.
