“He’s that good, he’s that important” – Nathan MacKinnon seizes the road of being one of the highest-paid player in NHL
Nathan Mackinnon
Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon could get big with his next upcoming NHL contract. He is deemed as one of the best players in the league and needless to say a fan favorite in Colorado. After his current deal expires, the Mack-Attack will be back with a fancy amount of money in his pockets after the next season.
Even after being one of the big players in the league, much has not been reflected in Avalanche’s contract, where he gets an annual average value of $6.3 million. He signed a 7-year contract extension on July 9, 2016, with a value of $44.1 million. In 2022-23 he is expected to earn a base salary of $6,850,000 million, which is a bit less considering his worth.
Elliotte Friedman comments on Nathan MacKinnon’s next contract
On Thursday, Elliotte Friedman, a sports journalist for Sportsnet, commented on his “32 Thoughts” podcast, that MacKinnon’s next contract will earn him one of the highest-paid NHL player’s seats. He further stated, “I’m really curious to see where we’re going to end up contract-wise with Nathan MacKinnon”. “The word I’ve heard is that they’ve been talking. I think it’s going to be a big number. I think the best way for me to say it is I think it’s going to be a big number.”
Elliotte further continued, “I think it’s a possibility, but not guaranteed, Nathan MacKinnon could end up being the highest-paid player in the league. Now, right now, that’s Connor McDavid at $12.5 million by AAV. I think it’s possible. Even if he isn’t, I think it’s going to be a big number.” “He’s that good and he’s that important. This is a big one, I’m sure the Avalanche probably wanted to keep it a little bit lower – still double digits. It’s possible this one goes into the highest-paid player in the NHL territory or close to it.”
Apart from MacKinnon’s contract, the other top 3 highest paid NHL players in 2022 are – Edmonton Oilers’ captain and center Connor McDavid with a $100 million contract for 8 years, New York Rangers winger and alternate captain Artemi Panarin with an $81.5 million contract for 7 years, and Toronto Maple Leafs’ center and alternate captain Auston Matthews with a 5-year $58,201,250 million deal. MacKinnon may be the next one to join the Top 10 NHL highest-paid players list.
