Goaltender Matt Murray was traded to Toronto Maple Leafs by the Ottawa Senators for future considerations on Monday. Murray has 5-12-2 with a 3.05 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage, and 1 shutout in 20 starts with the Senators this season. Murray has 132-78-22 with a 2.77 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and 14 shutouts in 246 games for the Pittsburg Penguins and Ottawa Senators.
The 28-year-old goalie has a 4-year $25 million contract with a $6.25 million average annual value, signed with the Ottawa Senators on 9th October 2020. The Maple Leafs received a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a seventh-round selection in the 2024 Draft. The Senators are going to retain 25% of Murray’s salary as part of the trade.

Matt Murray’s time with the Ottawa Senators didn’t go as planned after being acquired in a trade with the Pittsburg Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Penguins. He had a career-worst score during the 2020-21 season with 10-13-1, a 3.38 GAA, and a .893 save percentage in 27 games, 25 of them being starts.
This season he ran a score of 0-5-0 with a 3.26 GAA, and a .890 save percentage before being placed on waivers on November 27. He was assigned to Belleville of the American Hockey League the following day, as noted on nhl.com. Though an injury forced him to miss Ottawa’s final 29 games, he plated relatively well after his return from Belleville.

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said, “We’re thankful for Matt’s contributions and wish him well”. He was selected by the Pittsburg Penguins during the 2012 NHL Draft. As for his trade to the Leafs, he will be expected to fill the gap left by former goalie Jack Campbell as he has a chance to go into the unrestricted free agent group this Wednesday.
