The Capital One Arena on Friday witnessed the Edmonton Oilers absolutely playing with the Washington Capitals on ice. The game ended with the Oilers dominating the Caps in absolute 5-0 fashion. Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Stuart Skinner excelled in performances, ending the team’s 3-game losing streak.
Draisaitl scored 2 goals in the Oilers’ win, while McDavid had 4 assists with Skinner making 25 saves. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also had a goal and 2 assists ultimately defending their win following Wednesday’s 6-3 loss against Hurricanes.
Following the game, Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said, according to NHL.com,
“You need your top players performing if you’re going to win on a regular basis…and they certainly played really well.”
The game also marked Stuart Skinner’s first shutout of the 2023-24 season after getting pulled out during Wednesday’s game. Knoblauch said it would only take time till the team finds its footing, and the 5-0 victory proved him right.
Alex Ovechkin on Capitals loss against Oilers: “I think we didn’t play at all”
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin didn’t mince his words when he bluntly stated, “ I think we didn’t play at all.” He said that when the Oilers took control of the puck from the get-go “it’s dangerous”. Caps coach Spencer Carbery also agreed with the captain’s word.
“It’s disappointing…to play like that coming of Thanksgiving…to me it’s a very, very immature game.”Spencer Carbery according to Washington Post.
Carbery further blasted the Caps stating that Friday’s game was something a “young team” would play, not something coming from a Stanley Cup contender. Alex Ovechkin said that “stupid decisions, bad passes, and turnovers” cost the team their victory. His faceoff against Evgeny Kuznetsov was waved off as the officials declared the faceoff dead and asked to redo it before the goal.
During the game alternate captain, John Carlson got penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior following Evan Bouchard’s goal. The team also lost their right winger T.J. Oshie to an upper-body injury after colliding with Mattias Ekholm. The coach said that he would not be traveling to California and be put under IL for the time being.
The Capitals powerplay took a hit and did not go well as planned. Carbery stated during media presence that a lot of things need to change in terms of decisions, puck control, powerplay, etc. The Capitals will look forward to their comeback in the next game while the Oilers are striving to continue their winning streak in the regular season.
