On Tuesday, Boston Bruins captain and one of the NHL greats, Patrice Bergeron, called it a day on his career. The 38-year-old brought an end to a 19-year career. His retirement was announced through a letter published by the team’s official website, signaling the end of his time as a player.

It is with a full heart and a lot of gratitude that today I am announcing my retirement as a professional hockey player,” Bergeron wrote. Bergeron started to show signs of excellence in his early days. Playing as a center, he was drafted as a second-round pick in the 2003 draft. He would go on to play 1,464 games (both regular and postseason combined) in his legendary career. He also went on to score 427 goals and amassed over 1,040 points during his time with the Bruins.

While Bergeron was effective in coming forward, he also showed great defensive abilities. As a result of this, he won the Selke trophy six times. This trophy is awarded to the forward player with great defensive aspects. The Canadian also enjoyed success with his nation, leading the country to two Olympic gold medals. He also won the IIFH World Junior Championship with Canada.

There were certain rumors regarding his future. A few months ago, speculations started regarding the time of Patrice Bergeron as an active player. In his final season with the Boston Bruins, he captained the side to a historic regular season. The Bruins broke the record for most wins in a season. However, they were unable to repeat these heroics in the playoffs, as they were eliminated by the Florida Panthers.

Bergeron’s achievements speak for themselves. He currently ranks third in franchise history for the most games played, third in goals, and comes fourth in assists charts. As per reports, the Bruins are also planning to retire his number 37 to honor him. Twitter was left emotional following this announcement and hailed him for his contributions. Here are a few reactions.

The Bruins now face the daunting task of finding a replacement for him. While there is still time for the regular season to start, the team could likely lose David Krejci as well. One of the reasons for their record-breaking success last season was their depth in the middle. It will be interesting to see how the Bruins play without Bergeron for the first time in almost two decades.
