‘Laine in pain’ – Blue Jacket forward injured by an endboard
Patrick Laine
The Columbus Blue Jackets were high on the sports fervor along with their forward Patrick Laine as they stormed the fields against Carolina Hurricanes at the season opener. But, an unfortunate turn of events not only brought a 4-1 loss for them, but also an elbow sprain injury for the Jacket forward Laine. The crowd was left aghast as the forward left at 13:15 left of the second period.
The whole mishap took place with Laine’s right arm being wedged between the end board and the Carolina defenseman Brett Pesce, following which the player had to wait out the defeat, back in the dressing room.
Laine has been quite a show stealer himself, with 26 goals in 56 games during last season, though this time he had to jinx it with his new maties Johny Gaudreau and Boone Jenner. He was only behind Oliver Bjorkstrand with a score of 28 himself.
Laine’s sprain slips the game away for Blue Jacks
Johnny Gaudreau, the new linemate at the Blue Jacket forwards was only in the process of building chemistry in the debut game when the injury struck the whole team’s spirit.”Yeah, I mean, it [stinks],” Gaudreau said. “You never want someone to get hurt, but you’re on a new team, you’re building chemistry with your linemates, you think you had a good camp and then you’re not playing together the middle of the second period. Hopefully, it’s nothing too serious.”
Larsen, the team coach, and even Gaudreau the one in line with the forwards thought that the game kind of slipped away due to the downward sentiment. There was hardly any information on the forward Patrick Laine status then. The injury definitely wiped off the optimism at that point, but the only way to move forward is with enthusiasm, especially when it’s a season debut or one with a league.
“It’s just disappointment,” Larsen said. “It’s not frustration. That’s a wasted emotion. Unfortunately, I think they were building something there, they had a couple of good looks, they finished on one, and then that’s hockey. You can’t sit and feel sorry for yourself. Now we’ll move forward, see where it goes.”
