Former NHL player P.K. Subban is under much heat and receiving criticism for his recent comments. He cracked a joke on pop artist Lizzo’s body. This has not gone well among the fans and viewers. This incident occurred on Tuesday night when Subban was commenting on a game between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
His comment came as an answer to ESPN’s co-anchor John Buccigross, who said that it was time for the Maple Leafs to “pack a lunch.” This was about the embarrassing loss of the Maple Leafs at home to the Panthers. Buccigross said “packed lunch” would give them the strength and energy to perform better next time out.
In the heat of the moment, Subban perhaps forgot he was live on air and commented that the Maple Leafs will probably need to “pack a Lizzo-sized lunch,”. This was a direct reference to the plus-sized body of the pop artist. This would soon go viral and Subban realised he had made a big mistake.
Fans demand apology and sacking of PK Subban from ESPN

This comment by PK Subban immediately started receiving backlash on social media. Users quickly labeled him “fatphobic” and demanded his removal from ESPN. One user called out Subban for his recent comments on pride and suggested keeping his mouth sealed and locked away would be better.
NHL commentary has been under scrutiny a few times now. In January, Jack Edwards, announcer of the Boston Bruins, issued an apology after he made a comment body shaming Pat Maroon of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Earlier this month, Lightning’s radio analyst Phil Esposito made a similar comment, slamming a fan by referring to her as a fat woman.
Subban was also under the spotlight recently for his controversial take on the LGBTQ+ community. He pointed out that NHL players should not be forced to wear uniforms and endorse logos that show support and affection for the LGBTQ+ community if they are not comfortable in doing so.
As of Wednesday, Subban is yet to address this situation. He joined ESPN as an analyst last year after retiring from NHL. Subban played for 13 years. During this time, he made his services available to the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and the New Jersey Devils. Speaking of Lizzo, she recently won her fourth Grammy. She was last spotted at the Met Gala in New York a week days ago.
