The NHL has an immense fan following but certainly none could hold a claim on it. The first internal demographic study indicated that the National Hockey League has been putting the game under a microscope in which a particular community holds majority. To put into perspective, The NHL world has now reacted that gone are those days of such classifications regarding race, gender, or culture.

In the modern world, equality as a concept has evolved and has gained ground like never before. Although it is still not universal in nature (which is kind of a utopian view), equality is based along the lines of – ‘the more, the better’. A similar view has been taken by the NHL recently.

Taking the initiative along practical lines, the NHL took charge and performed a study of its workforce comprising 32 teams and their support staff. Although not very shocking, but on some level people must have known or definitely would have the faintest idea about the alarming situation pertaining to the NHL.

In recent times you all must know the trend of – ‘taking a knee’, a symbolic gesture against racism. NHL study report reveals that an astounding workforce totaling 83.6% is white and across genders – men comprise almost 62% of it. The survey was of course anonymous and voluntary in order to maintain data integrity and unbiasedness. And on the rink, players, coaches, and officials make up 90% of that population.

National Hockey League’s executive VP Kim Davis who handles social impact, growth, and legislative affairs is of the view – “The whole purpose behind doing a workforce study is to provide a baseline: a fact-based baseline so that you can begin to develop very intentional and specific strategies around where you need to hire, how you need to hire, how you need to improve your brand.”

The NHL and its governing bodies and officials are keen to make changes in a forward direction based on this data. In a world where data has become the new king for policy formulation and decision-making, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is optimistic as he believes – “data will shape policies that will produce the greatest impacts in the years to come.”
