Adam Johnson’s death has left the NHL world in utter shock. The horrifying scene of blood dyeing the cold ice floor red has been nothing but a chilling experience for both spectators present on and off the ice. Many pundits and NHL players have since then come forth to question player safety and the use of protective gear for their necks.

Former NHLer Sean Avery joined TV host Jesse Watters to discuss whether the incident was intentional or accidental. Jesse Watters labeled Matt Petgrave’s move as “homicide” stating he has “never seen a move like that in hockey.” Avery joined in the conversation noting, “It’s terrible. It’s awful I can’t even watch it.”

According to Collin Rugg on X, Avery is of the view that the kick that knocked and slashed Adam Johnson was intentional. Although no one can say what the intent of the act was, the leg going up to Johnson’s neck seemed to have been intentional.

“Did this kid make a movement that was very unorthodox? Do I think that he was trying to make contact of some sort? Absolutely. Do I think that he woke up and said, I'm gonna murder somebody today? No.”

South Yorkshire Police are investigating Adam Johnson’s death

The police are already investigating the matter to see how Matt Petgrave should be held responsible. It’s an adrenaline-rushed game so whether the kick was intentional or accidental will be difficult to say.

Jesse Watters also questioned Matt Petgrave’s actions as he asked how someone’s leg goes all up to the neck of another player during a game. To his question, Sean Avery stated, “I saw the leg move, it shouldn’t have been where it was.” Avery also noted that his 3-year-old is into hockey and as a parent, this incident is very concerning and nerve-wracking.

Over the 20 years, hockey skate blades have improved vastly. They are now thinner and more sharper. Some players have been victims of such blades, like Taylor Hall, and Evander Kane who got their wrists and tendons sliced during on-ice matches.

The organization is now in the process of making neck guards mandatory to prevent “freak accidents” like this. Fans are bashing Matt Petgrave for his actions. As of now, he has not made any media appearance but was noted to be “quite distraught” after Saturday’s game.
