The National Hockey League (NHL) has seen a lot of players using some extreme antics over decades on ice. These types of plays have earned them the tag of “pests” by the fans of the game. One such “pest” according to the league was Sean Avery. After making a name for himself using these tricks, he is now seen speaking on topics on his podcast. Recently, he called out Ryan Reaves for his actions on the ice.
This is, however, not the first time he has taken a shot at Reaves. The podcast host was not so thrilled the player signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. At the time of Reaves, joining, Avery would predict that this trade will turn into a “sideshow“.
Reaves has been in a feud with Corey Perry of the Chicago Blackhawks as of late. They two even got into a tangle during the Blackhawks’ 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs. The duo had not been penalized for their earlier fight and even glared at each other from the benches. Taking a shot at this, Avery would once again mock the 19-year NHL veteran.
"Let me just ask Ryan Reaves, what planet do you live on brother? I know you're in Toronto right now and everyone is buying you Tim Hortons and Timbits and you're getting back pats everywhere you go... but what is wrong with you? "Sean Avery as per HockeyFeed.
He further gave a reason for his words and made a bold prediction regarding Reaves’ future. Avery added:
"You will be out of the lineup by Game 46 because you're a clock killer. You can't play in the league anymore. So, please check yourself when referring to Corey Perry not being your equal in the toughness department."
Is the move to sign Ryan Reaves proving wrong for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
The Toronto Maple Leafs sent some people rubbing their foreheads when they signed Ryan Reaves for free this season. The Toronto-based outfit’s 2022-23 campaign saw a lot of twists and turns.
Their elimination at the hands of the Florida Panthers raised several questions with many claiming them to be overconfident in that run. The signing of Reaves meant an enforcer was on his way to join them. The way this season has started, questions have once again been raised.
The Maple Leafs are one of the big names so every step they take is closely observed compared to others. The signing of Reaves meant the Maple Leafs now had someone to “fight’ off the others. However, his performances this season have not been up to the standards set by many. In the games he has played, the side has only possessed the puck 40% of the time.
Whereas on chances, they have been out-chanced 25-12 when Reaves has been on the field. With him on the side, the dangerous chances stat is also not in their favor reading 15-5. Lastly, they are 4-0 down in goals when he has skated around. All these stats have led the fans of the Maple Leafs to question their team regarding his signing.
While the 36-year-old veteran is on the fourth line, meaning he gets limited time to showcase his talent. He has though not made the most of it. How the player turns this torrid form around and gets the fans back on his side remains to be seen.
