Carolina Hurricanes alternate captain Sebastian Aho takes the puck to his face, as NY Islanders seize this opportunity to pull ahead of their competitor. Game 5 of the 1st-round playoff series ended with the Islanders celebrating a 3-2 victory over the series-leading Canes.

Aho’s face was cut open after being struck near his mouth by a shot from Pierre Engvall. Islanders Brock Nelson took the chance of the loose puck to shoot it midair past goalie Antti Raata. Aho left the ice immediately leaving a trail of blood behind and was taken care of urgently by the staff members.

Thankfully, the cut wasn’t deep and the forward joined the lineup shortly afterward. On the other hand, Tuesday night presented another historic moment as Islanders defenceman Sebastian Aho and Canes forward took seats at the penalty box together.

It was the first time in NHL history that players with the same name took seats side-to-side in the penalty box. This hilarious yet nerve-wracking scene cooled down the tense arena atmosphere a bit. The first penalty was fed to Islanders Aho who interfered with Derek Stepan with 8 minutes left in regulation.

The second call came when Canes Aho high-sticked Bo Horvat. Brock Nelson spoke about Aho getting hit by the puck, “Unfortunate it hits a guy in the face”. Although the incident was unfortunate, the Islanders didn’t fail to capture the second to take the lead in the game.

Aho said, “I just kind of didn’t know what hit me”. He was unaware of the puck as it came down“pretty quickly there.” The puck was not meant to be in the face and it was surely an accident, but some said, Hyman and Aho gave new meaning to the word ‘faceoff’. In Game 5 two players from different teams got hit by a puck on the face.

Other than Sebastian Aho, Edmonton Oilers Zach Hyman also got hit by the puck to his face in a game against LA Kings. The shot ricochetted off his face as he indirectly helped the Oilers in gaining a 5-2 lead. Hyman wasn’t hurt seriously and continued on the game, but it could’ve been a serious accident looking back at that incident.
