“A positive impact” – Senators agree to terms with forward Mathieu Joseph to a four-year $11.8 million contract

On July 29th the Ottawa Senators announced that they have come to terms with forward Mathieu Joseph to a 4-year $11.8 million contract extension with an annual average value of $2.95 million. The contract includes a breakdown of $2.5 million in 2022-23, $2.7 million in 2023-24, $3.3 million in 2024-25, and $3.3 million in 2025-26.

On March 20 the Senators acquired Joseph in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Nick Paul. With the Senators, the 25-year-old has scored a record of 12 points with 4 goals and 8 assists in 11 games with 6 penalty minutes. He ended the season with a career-high in assists, and points over 69 games between Ottawa and Lightning.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said, “Mathieu’s addition made an immediate positive impact as someone who fits in well with our group”. “He has high-end speed, a nose for the net, and is responsible in his own end. He’s long demonstrated good upside and is someone we’re counting on to have another solid season both in 2022-23 and beyond.”

Mathieu Joseph was drafted by the Lightning in the 2015 Draft as the 99th overall. As per cbc.ca, he has a career total of 82 points with 41 goals and 41 assists in 232 games. He has also assisted the Lightning in winning the Stanley Cup in 2021 by registering 2 assists. On the International stage, he has led Canada to win two silver medals in championships. He has also been a participant in the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2019 World Championship in Slovakia.
