As the countdown for the new NHL season gets underway, the excitement among hockey fans is rising. One side that is being closely monitored is the Chicago Blackhawks. This is not just because of their pick of Connor Bedard, but also of who will lead the time next season. Defensemen Seth Jones has now expressed his interest in the leadership role for the side.
Since July 2008, the Blackhawks looked for inspiration from Jonathan Toews. He captained the side to one of their most successful eras, winning three Stanley Cups. After 16 glorious years, Toews was not resigned by the team and he left the club following the conclusion of last season. Since then he has announced a career break for the upcoming season.
With the spot for captaincy vacant, Jones has claimed that he wants to lead the team out now and will be happy to be their next leader. As several players showed up at the NHL North American Player Media Tour on Tuesday, he was asked about this development.
“I’ve always wanted to be a captain. I’ve learned from some great leaders — Shea Weber, Nick Foligno, Jonathan Toews — I mean, I played with some of the greatest captains that we’ve seen. It would be pretty special,” Jones said to the media. Whether his wish will be looked upon remains to be seen.
Can Seth Jones realistically lead the Chicago Blackhawks next season?
In professional sports, a captain is usually someone whom the team can look to for guidance. In his two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Seth Jones has shown his leadership skills quite well and could very well lead the team for the upcoming season. Five days after signing the contract with the team, he penned down an extension, showcasing his will to perform at the top level.
Speaking about his NHL experience, he has appeared in 730 games and has collected 374 points (82 goals and 292 assists). Last year he appeared in 72 games for the Blackhawks and amazed 37 points (12 goals and 25 assists). “Everyone has a voice in here, everyone is allowed to speak up and say what they want. It shouldn’t be just four or five guys who are able to talk,” he recalled Jonathan Toews saying this.
The final decision though will be taken by the Blackhawks organization. They would surely like to keep their options expanded and look for the best possible options before making any decision. It will be tough to replace Toews at the helm of the team but they will soon have to take this tough decision.
