“Couldn’t be happier” – Shane Wright expected Kraken to select him in 2022 NHL Draft

Shane Wright glad to be part of the Seattle Kraken

After Day 2 of the development camp with the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday, Shane Wright said that he wanted to be part of the Krakens for a long time. He had wished the team would pick him up during the draft all along. He recalled a conversation he had a long time ago with prospect Brennan Othmann, who got selected by the New York Rangers as the 16th overall at the 2021 Draft. They were close friends then, and Wright told him how he would like it if the Seattle Kraken chose him in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Wright mentioned, “It was the overall fit and what the organization is building to”. “They are a new team, so they don’t have as many prospects in the system as some other teams do. I feel it’ll just give me a lot more opportunities to step in to make a difference right away. The potential ability to be part of a situation and be a building block and a huge piece in their team and the organization for the future was something that really excited me. Now that it finally worked out this way, I couldn’t be happier.”

Even before the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft, Shane Wright was projected as the No. 1 pick, though it changed later on. He passed through Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Arizona Coyotes which made him fall to the Krakens at No. 4. Despite dropping three slots he expressed how delighted he was to be in the Krakens group. He went on, “I’m over the moon, I’m so happy to be here”. “So happy to be in Seattle and to be a Kraken. I love the city so far, love everything about it. The support online, as well from all the fans in Seattle and all around North America, has been unreal.”

During the developmental program, Matty Beniers and Wright were the main focus of the group. As noted on nhl.com, Wright said about Beniers, “I think anytime you can brush arms with that guy and his talent you want to talk to or learn from him”. “He’s such a talented player and is going to be a high-end player in the NHL for the foreseeable future.” Wright is expected to attend full camp training. He’s been in Seattle for a few days now.

He further noted how welcoming the Krakens were to him after his draft selection. He is likely to be on the roster and skate in the NHL right away. The Seattle Kraken will begin their regular season on October 12. As much as Wright is looking forward to playing with them, he is not taking anything for granted. He commented, “That’s every guy’s mindset coming into camp”. “Once it comes to training camp, it’s your mindset, your job to earn the spot on the team, so that’s going to be my mindset coming into training camp and throughout the offseason.”
