“This is an awful contract,” Broadcaster Sid Seixeiro BLASTS Leafs for signing Auston Matthews to $53 million extension, calls it ‘huge loss’ for organization

While Leafs fans are celebrating the signup of their star player, broadcaster Sid Seixeiro called out the organization for their poor decision of re-signing Auston Matthews for only 4-years.

Toronto Maple Leafs fans are sighing in relief after news of their star player Auston Matthews signing was confirmed earlier today. But unfortunately, not everyone seems to be feeling so. Popular broadcaster Sid Seixeiro blasted the Leafs’ organization for signing their star player for only 4 years instead of 8 years in the renewed contract.

Matthews has confirmed his stay for 4 more years for $53 million, hitting a cap space of $13.25 million in AAV. His current contract makes him the highest-paid NHLer with Colorado Avalanche Nathan MacKinnon holding $12.6 AAV just behind him. He also surpassed 3x Hart Trophy winner Connor McDavid who’s at $12.5 million annual average value.

Sid Seixeiro stated that it’s Matthews who has benefited from this contract, but it was a “huge loss” move from the Leafs side. He stated, “When Auston Matthews has a chance to sign for eight years and decides for four that’s a bad deal for the team.”

He further went on to say that after looking at the fan base it seemed like “the goal isn’t to win the Stanley Cup the goal is to keep Auston Matthews.” Seixeiro noted that it was “the inferiority complex” that created the vibe of Matthews “stay is the only thing that mattered.”

According to Seixeiro, a team should sign their star plate for 8 years as it gives them a general idea of how to manage the rest of the cap space and to build a team centering that player. He praised Morgan Rielly for signing an 8-year deal saying “he’s the actual captain of the team.”

Although Sid Seixeiro blasted off the Maple Leafs organization their fans as well as captain John Tavares were relieved of the news. Tavares is excited to have ‘Pappi’ with them as the team strives for their Stanley Cup contention. The team has yet to win a Cup since 1967.

This year the team is hopeful to get into the contention race after signing Matthews, Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and Ryan Reaves. William Nylander is also on his last contract year and may sign an extension. But with Matthews signing for a high pay salary, Nylander’s future with the Leafs is questionable.

No confirmation on his extension has been made by the organization. Following Matthews’ signing, he took to Twitter noting that he’s “fortunate to continue this journey” with the Leafs and “will do everything I can to help” the team get their first Cup in decades.
