The Pittsburgh Penguins had a two-goal lead and were cruising to eliminate the New York Rangers with less than 30 minutes left and advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, unfortunately, center Sidney Crosby left the ice with an upper-body injury and things witnessed a 360-degree change.
Following this incident, Pittsburgh’s lead evaporated when they gave up as many as three goals in a short span of 2:42 late in the second period. As a result, the animated New York team went on to register a 5-3 triumph in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, reducing the Penguins’ lead in the best-of-seven series to 3-2
“We’ve got an experienced group,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said, as quoted by NHL.com. “We’ve just got to keep playing the game.”

Pittsburgh forward Teddy Blueger joined defenseman Marcus Pettersson in saying Crosby’s departure with 5:43 remaining in the second period was not the reason for the Rangers’ three quick goals that gave them a 3-2 lead with 2:07 left.

“Obviously, you don’t want to see anyone get hurt, and obviously ‘Sid’ is a real important player for us,” Blueger said. “Throughout the year, we played without him and did pretty well. We battle through injuries, so I don’t think it’s anything we can’t overcome.”
“He’s a huge part of our team, of course, but we’ve shown in the past that we can play without our stars, so we have to do a better job,” Pettersson said. “We knew they were going to push, and once they got the first goal they got energy from that. We have to do a better job of killing that momentum.”
