The way things have been developing for the Edmonton Oilers in the past few days, some were left surprised by their latest victory. A 5-0 thumping of the Washington Capitals showed that they still have the talent to turn their season around. One person who though was left amazed and stunned by the performance of the Capitals was coach Spencer Carbery.
The Caps were nowhere to be seen in this game. Their captain Alex Ovechkin was left at a loss of words as he shook his head in disbelief. While he did not say much, the team felt the wrath of their coach who called out his players following this huge defeat.
While winning and losing is the natural part of the game, Carbery claims that the team was disappointing to watch. Following the game he had some strong words for his side. He even said that the team gave up the fight and their minds were already in California and the upcoming road trip.
"It's frustrating. It's just really disappointing, really... You're gonna lose games in this league... but to play like that... before we go on the road, it's a very, very immature game... Something you would expect from a young team that thinks they're already in California and halfway on the plane before that game even starts".Spencer Carbery through The Hockey Newsv
Capitals miss huge power-play opportunities as attack continues to struggle going forward
The Washington Capitals had been on a good winning streak before this game. They came into this matchup on a five-game winning streak where their attack seemed to have been stabilized. However, this 5-0 against the struggling Edmonton Oilers once again raised doubts about their talents going forward as they miss huge power-play opportunities.
The Capitals had five power-play opportunities but they failed to take advantage of it once again. Meanwhile, the Oilers took full use of it as Connor McDavid shined with four assists in the game.
Following this loss, an alarming stat against the Caps has risen up. They are now 0-for-28 in power-play opportunities in their last 10 games. The inability to take advantage of numbers in their favor is proving costly for them.
To make matters worse for them, forward T.J. Oshie will not travel with the team on their road trip following an upper-body injury suffered in this game. This makes things hard for the Caps who now take on the San Jose Sharks, LA Kings, and Anaheim Ducks in their trip to California. They will need a much better showing from the offense if they are to bounce back in this heavy schedule.
