Fans hope Tom Fitzgerald’s addition to the team helps the Devils survive 2024-25 season games and aim for Stanley Cup contention.

Tom Fitzgerald signs a multi-year deal with the New Jersey Devils as he gets promoted to President of Hockey Operations as well as retaining his former role as the GM. While fans are excited to celebrate his new contract, they are more worried about their current standing in the ongoing 2023-24 games.

No sooner did the NJ Devils reveal contract details on Fitzgerald, than the NHL fans roared on X, to get a goalie. The goaltending situation is indeed concerning for the team at this point, as they failed to stop the puck numerous times. Currently, the team is 24-18-3 this season, tying 4th in the Metropolitan Division with the NY Islanders. They are currently 2 points out of Stanley Cup entry.

Now with new team additions and changes, the fans hope Fitzgerald can bring in a goalie who can stop pucks. One X user noted, “Congrats now GO GET A GOALIE” while another noted, “Hey Fitz, get us a goalie and a solid defenseman. Our clock is ticking.”

Fitzgerald thanks the organization for giving him an opportunity to make the team better and to grow as a person alongside the players. He noted,

The organization has come a long way and I realize that there is even more work to do as we establish ourselves as consistent contenders and take another big step.

Tom Fitzgerald addresses the ongoing goaltender issue of the NJ Devils

While it’s celebratory news for a promotion, there’s much work cut out for Tom Fitzgerald as the team’s GM and president. One of the most scarring issues has been the goalies. He admits he’d like to see more positive results from the goaltenders as well as all the other players if they want to participate in the Stanley Cup race.

He said the addition of a goalie will surely help the team, but the players also need to take further advantage of the ice around them and outplay their opponents. Fitzgerald commented,

I’m not going to say I’m cool with…I want our goalies to play better, no doubt. But we want our players to play better in front of them.

Minimizing mistakes will take the most priority during on-ice matches and “we have some work to do there.” In 2020 the Devils recorded 122-116-27 since Fitzgerald took GM position full-time. Even last season they reached the Stanley Cup playoffs last season and even reached the 2nd Round in Eastern Conference. 

Unfortunately, the Carolina Hurricanes swiped them away in five games. This time around the 55-year-old GM wants to see a change. He wants to bring the Cup back to NJ fans. But first and foremost, the goalie and defense need to iron up.
