Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Tony DeAngelo refuses to sit down and watch games from the sidelines again. He said he hasn’t talked with the coach John Tortorella on his decision for scratching him for 5-straight games. The last game DeAngelo played was on April 4 against St. Louis Blues.
As of now, Tortorella has refused to comment on the situation on why DeAngelo was made healthy scratch, but fans are expecting a reply on Monday. With the Stanley Cup season opening this week, Tortorella will show up for media.
This wasn’t the first time DeAngelo was a healthy scratch, back on December 9, 2022, the team decided to sideline the defenceman. He was later announced to have a non-roster status due to personal reasons. As of now, he has participated in 22 games with linemate Ivan Provorov.

Defenceman Tony DeAngelo said that he is not happy with John Tortorella’s decision, but will respect it as he is the “coach”. He further stated how he wished to be a Flyers in his career, so these small hiccups will not stand in his goal.
“I love being a Flyer”. “My whole life I wanted to be a Flyer, and now that I am, I don’t take it for granted at all. It’s something that means a lot to me, so I’m not going to let any relationship stuff get in the way. He’s the coach of the team, so you’ve got to respect it, and I respect what he does.”
“Do I agree with it and what happened the last five games? Absolutely not”. “I think it’s ridiculous that I didn’t play the last five. That’s one thing. But he’s also the coach, and it’s not my job to decide that.”
DeAngelo said he wants “to be a good teammate, which I think I did. I tried to stay out of the way. I didn’t want to be a distraction (during his benchings) while these guys have stuff to play for — milestones guys are trying to get to, guys are trying to play for contracts for next year.”
Tony DeAngelo has one more year left on his contract with a cap hit of $5 million. This 2022-23 season, he has made 42 points in 70 games with 11 goals and 31 assists. In his NHL career, he recorded 199 points with 45 goals and 154 assists in 340 games.
DeAngelo further owned up to his game stating, “Earlier in the year, I thought I was playing well, and then I dipped a little bit. To be honest with you I was all over the place, I was inconsistent. That’s not Torts fault. It’s not his fault I was inconsistent.”
