“An era is over” – Twitter reacts as Adidas to cut off supply for NHL after 2023-24 season

Adidas to stop being NHL's official supplier

What we are used to seeing may change soon by the season of 2023-24 in the National Hockey League as Adidas, the official apparel and uniform supplier for NHL may cut off its ties with the league. Adidas and NHL dropped the “Reverse Retro” line of jerseys during the 2021 season, with 32 new jerseys expected to arrive shortly.

According to a report from ESPN’s Greg Wyshinski, NHL jerseys will no longer have the Adidas logo on the back. It’s not much time left, considering the 2023-24 season approaching. The League has confirmed Adidas’ impending departure to ESPN, and many sources note the same. This news sure brought a wave of disappointment throughout social media platforms.

In the 2017-18 season, Adidas took over the NHL official platform from Reebok with a deal worth “at least double the $35 million annually that Reebok had been paying for the rights,” according to canucksarmy.com. Reebok joined hands with the NHL after the 2004-05 lockout but was defeated by Adidas who took over in the later seasons.

In a statement, the NHL noted, “The NHL and Adidas look forward to continuing to work closely together over the next two years and to a smooth transition to the new authentic NHL uniform supplier, which will be announced by the NHL at the appropriate time”.  After Adidas took over they paid at least double $35 million annually for the rights.

Twitter has been reacting strongly to this declaration. While some are busy debating, some started taking guesses on where NHL’s next stop will be. Additionally, Adidas also mentioned that they will not be extending any individual endorsement deals with star players like Connor McDavid. Before Adidas’ current contract expires the NHL is on the lookout for another partner they can join hands with before the 2024 deadline.
