The matchups between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers are always heated up. Dubbed the “Battle of Alberta“, the two rivals shared the ice field on a memorable day. The 20th anniversary of the Heritage Classic saw Oilers’ defenceman Vincent Desharnais scored a wonderful goal in his side’s 5-2 win over the rivals.

While the temperatures may be dropping, the atmosphere on the ice field was heated up. The outdoor game at the Commonwealth saw the two rivals coming in poor form with both yet to find their winning stride.

While the Flames had one more game, the form of the Oilers was concerning. They took to the field with a 1-5-1 record, with consecutive losses. Perhaps they needed a bit of fresh air. The Edmonton-based side found their attacking mojo again as they hammered their rivals 5-2 on Sunday.

Forward Evander Kane looked like he was back in form. He had previously attacked his coach for less playing time. He scored once and assisted twice in this game. It seemed he had scored the fourth goal at first glance but replays showed it was Desharnis who scored the fourth. It turned out to be the pick of the goals as he crushed a long-range effort into the net. This turned out to be the first career NHL goal. What a time to score indeed.

"I thought we got back to our foundation of how we like to play and how we need to play. I thought we skated really well. We were physical and if you look at the goals we scored, every single one of them was around their blue paint or creating havoc around their blue paint. That is a recipe for success for our group".

Brett Kulak and Zach Hayman were the other scores. Meanwhile goalie. Stuart Skinner was impressive in the net and made 24 saves to keep the Flames at two goals only. For the Flames though, it was a fifth straight defeat.

The Oilers will now take on the Dallas Stars in their next encounter. However, the Flames will get their hands on the Stars first as the Dallas-based team takes on both these sides in their next two games. Could the Flames end their five-game losing streak, is something the fans are waiting to watch.
