NHL legend Wayne Gretzky praises Connor McDavid for being “too good” in several interviews
Connor McDavid and Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky in his April interview with GQ Sports stated that he believes Connor McDavid will win the Stanley Cup once because “he’s too good”. Furthermore, he noted, “When you guys do win — and you will win a Stanley Cup — the feeling is just over the top.” “But when you actually lift the Cup, it’s pretty special, and you will lift it one day because you’re too good.”
Both of them got together for GQ during NHL All-Star Weekend in St. Louis in January where they were more busy conversing with each other rather than focusing on the left-out questions.

Wayne Gretzky compares Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid
Gretzky recalled the time he rank up McDavid for the first time, “I think you broke a record, you did something pretty special, which you seemed to do every night, so, I remember I called to congratulate you…”
McDavid laughingly said, “I answer the call and it’s, ‘Connor, it’s Wayne Gretzky.’ I’m like, ‘Turn the music down, turn the music down.’” Back in one of the interviews in 2016, Hall of Famer Gretzky compared Sidney Crosby and McDavid.
As per Craig Custance of ESPN.com, Wayne noted, “Sid is still the best player in hockey. That’s a mantle you earn over time. It’s one of those things where you have to earn that title.” Patrik Laine’s name also came up during his conversation as both he and Crosby were leading NHL at that time.
During his comparison between Crosby and McDavid, he stated, “Is Connor a great player? Absolutely. Does Connor have an opportunity to be the next Crosby? Absolutely. Right now, Sidney deserves to be known as the best player in the game.”
He further continued, “He’s been the best player consistently in his career. He’s won Stanley Cups and he’s won gold medals. Until somebody takes that mantle away from him, he’s still going to hold the crown.
Even McDavid himself commented, “When I first played Sid, that was really exciting for me.” “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Sidney Crosby over there and I’m about to play against him.’ Then the face-off, I don’t even think my stick touched the ice, he swept it back so fast. That was a special moment for sure.”
Wayne Gretzky or “The Great One” has more than 2,000 points, and holds 61 NHL records approximately. During his NHL years, he took the ice by storm and left a mark in its history. Many players are running forth to catch up and break the record, among which Alex Ovechkin seems to be the closest.
