“Nobody more special” – Wayne Gretzky to honour former Oilers locker room attendant Joey Moss with mega draw

Wayne Gretzky
Former National Hockey League (NHL) great Wayne Gretzky is still finding ways to help honour Joey Moss‘ memory, who passed away a year and a half ago. The legendary ice hockey player is also asking others to do the same for the Edmonton Oilers’ former locker room attendant.
Moss, who was born with Down syndrome, helped clean the locker room, did laundry, filled water bottles and handed out towels for 35 years. The Edmonton native started with the five-time Stanley Cup champions in 1985 and quickly grew to be a team favourite before taking his last breath on October 26, 2020, at age of 57 years.
In Moss’ honour, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation is conducting a mega 50/50 draw during the Western Conference Finals. The proceeds will be donated to these three charities: the Special Olympics Edmonton, Edmonton Down Syndrome Society and Winnifred Stewart Association.
“Moss was such a wonderful young man”

“[Moss] was such a wonderful young man and I had the opportunity, my dad’s sister was mentally challenged, so I was very comfortable from the time I met Joey,” Gretzky said on ‘NHL on TNT’, as quoted NHL.com. “[Longtime Oilers general manager] Glen Sather was kind enough to get him in the locker room and not only give him a job and an opportunity but treated him like a regular.”

The jackpot will accumulate through the Oilers’ Game 4 against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.
“Listen, nobody was more special than Joey Moss,” Gretzky said. “I know the Edmonton Oilers are so proud of him. The city of Edmonton is so proud of him. Get out and support him and all of his charities.”
