Gretzky put out a few names among whom, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby’s name was the most focused. The Great One couldn’t stop praising Sid the Kid, as he stated that Crosby’s accomplishments and he as a person definitely deserves a spot on the NHL Mount Rushmore.

He also praised Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin but pointed out how Crosby’s presence in the Penguins saved the whole organization who were struggling at that point in time. The crew of NHL on TNT also praised The Next One as they had him on their mind when they started the discussion.

The crew couldn’t get enough of telling Crosby’s story and praising him, as they added the Big Four names, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Orr. They asked Gretzky if Crosby should replace anyone from the list or should occupy the 5th post.

Gretzky noted, “Listen, I bragged about Sidney Crosby for 20 years now because I think he’s done such a great job carrying our game, carrying our sport. Both him and Ovechkin”.

“It’s hard to get the right number of guys. If we’re talking about Mount Rushmore… Go to five guys. Go to six guys. Who cares? It doesn’t matter. Just honor the people that deserve to be there, and no question, Sid deserves to be there.”

Gretzky also noted that maybe not now, but in 5-10 years another name will be on the discussion, that being, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid. He further added that it’s hard to pick guys from different eras into one list, as there were so many legends in hockey.

“It’s hard to pick people from different eras. You got guys like Jean Beliveau from way back, and guys like Gordie Howe, Stan Mikita, and Bobby Hull. So many great players, it’s hard to narrow it right down.”

Gretzky and the crew praised Sidney Crosby for his endeavors on and off the ice, and how he has helped the hockey community in every possible way. His joining the Penguins turned their organization and made it so large at this point in time.

Gretzky noted,  “I mean, he helped save that franchise, when Sid went to Pittsburgh, they were struggling at that point of time. And he saved the franchise, basically.”
