The biggest Edmonton Oilers fan had a special message to share after a Game 7 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference First Round on Saturday: “Play La Bamba, baby!”

Ben Stelter, who is a five-year-old undergoing treatment for glioblastoma (a type of brain cancer), became popular with the National Hockey League (NHL) fans after a visit with the team back in March. The little kid recorded a special video after the Oilers beat the Kings 2-0 and clinched the best-of-seven Playoffs series in the 2022 Stanley Cup.

Mike Stelter, Ben’s father, shared a cute, small video of his enthusiastic son shouting for “La Bamba,” the 1950s Ritchie Valens hit, from Las Vegas. This tune holds a special place in the Edmonton dugout as it was a favourite of Joey Moss, the Oilers’ longtime locker room attendant, who was born with Down syndrome and died recently at 57 in October 2020.

As a result, “La Bamba” continued to be played after each Oilers win. Meanwhile, the special fan – Stelter gained massive internet fame and even had his own trading card made by Upper Deck.

“It feels good to do it in that fashion,” McDavid said, as quoted by NHL.com. “There is always a lot of talk about the defensive side of the game, so for our group to step up in a big moment and play like that in a 2-0 win with ‘Smitty’ playing great and contributions from everyone, it feels good.”
