Zdeno Chara is a professional ice hockey player for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. He plays the position of defenceman for the team. As the tallest player in NHL, he is nicknamed “Big Z”. His height also provides him with excellent puck control skills which makes him one of the most formidable foes. Zdeno Chara was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 1996 NHL Draft as the 56th overall in the third round. He gained recognition from the team as their stay-in-home defender for four seasons before getting traded to the Ottawa Senators during the 2001 NHL Draft. In the following year he had a career-high in goals (10), and points (23), and once again in the 2002-03 season he registered a total of 30 assists and 39 points. He earned his first NHL All-Star Game. 

He was also nominated for the James Norris Memorial Trophy as NHL’s top defenceman. He joined Boston Bruins and became their captain sometime in July 2006. While with the Bruins he received his second James Norris nomination after having a career-high of 17 goals, 34 assists, and 51 points. He assisted the Bruins to their Stanley Cup victory against the Vancouver Canucks, Cup won since 1972. Zdeno Chara is widely known for having the hardest slap shot in NHL history. His 1000th NHL game was on 24 March 2012 against the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win for the Bruins. 

In December 2020 he signed with the Washington Capitals and recorded his first goal against New York Islanders. Later on September 18, 2021, it was announced that Chara penned a contract with the Islanders once again for a year. By the end of the season, he was named the finalist of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy which is given to players who ‘best exemplify the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.’
