“Pretty special” – Avalanche’s Cale Makar sets team record for most season-goals by defenseman in win against Flyers

Cale Makar

The defenseman Cale Makar scored a couple of goals to set a franchise record for the Colorado Avalanche in a 6-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday at the Ball Arena. The Calgary native smashed his 23rd and 24th goals to pass the record of Sandis Ozolinsh for the most single-season goals by an Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques defenseman.

“Mikko [Rantanen] told me on the bench. It’s pretty special,” Makar said. “But those goals go back to the team. It’s awesome to achieve something like that, but at the end of the day we’re focused on this last run in the regular season.”

Makar had a great outing for the Colorado team as the 23-year-old made it 2-1 with a power-play goal 44 seconds later when his point shot through traffic beat Flyers’ goaltender Carter Hart at 13:46. He again netted the puck at 8:25 for the 6-3 final.

“On an individual basis, I don’t think I had my best game, but at the end of the day that’s why we have depth,” he added. “Effort-wise, I thought that it was there all game. I thought we had really good back pressure from our forwards, which helped us on the back end create good gaps, and it kind of all starts from there for us.”

Apart from a brilliant show by Mkaar, Nazem Kadri had a goal and two assists, Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher each had a goal and an assist, while Pavel Francouz made 28 saves for the Avalanche (46-14-5). Reacting to his side’s smooth run against Philadelphia, Colorado coach Jared Bednar said:

“I thought we had a good jump. Pretty good offensively tonight, I thought. Didn’t make a lot of mistakes, but some of the ones we made, we gave them some easy goals. I didn’t really like that part of it.”
