“Proud day for our organization” – Owen Power, No. 1 pick in 2021 Draft signs contract with Sabres
Owen Power
Owen Power, who was born in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga, Ontario, was the No. 1 pick in the 2021 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. The Canadian defenceman on Friday signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
The 19-year-old Canadian ice hockey player will join the Sabres on Saturday ahead of Buffalo’s away game at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday. Power is expected to make his NHL debut at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, as general manager Kevyn Adams revealed.

“It’s a proud day for our organization,” Adams said, as quoted by NHL.com. “We certainly believe in Owen and his abilities both on and off the ice, just the person he is. You’ve heard me talk over and over again about culture and what we’re building here and he is a phenomenal person, human being, just the way he carries himself. He treats people well. We’re excited just to have him join this group and come in and be himself.“
“We’re putting Owen in a position to succeed”
Adams further went on to mention that there would be no expectations placed on Power other than him playing to his strengths.
“We’ll have some conversations over the next two, three days, myself and Owen and the coaching staff, and just make sure that we’re putting him in a position to succeed and also helping him take a breath and just realize that he can just go be himself,” he added.
“He doesn’t have to feel the weight of the world or anything extra, stress or pressure. He can just go be part of a group and just play. I think it’ll kind of shake itself out, honestly. But I do think it’s an important time for him to just feel the League and see what it’s all about.”
