He was picked second overall by the Kings in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and with this, he became the highest-drafted black player in NHL history.

Born on August 19, 2002, Byfield is of Jamaican descent from his father, Clinton. The teenage hockey player was the first overall pick in the 2018 OHL Draft and went on to win the OHL Rookie of the Year as well as the CHL Rookie of the Year titles. In the 2018–19 season, he put up 29 goals and 61 points in 64 games.

Quinton Byfield won a silver medal at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which’s an under-18 international ice hockey tournament that was held in Piešťany, Slovakia and Břeclav, and the Czech Republic. The youngster also won a gold medal for his nation at the 2020 World Junior Championships held in the Czech Republic and contributed with one assist in seven games.
