Born on August 19, 2002, Byfield is of Jamaican descent from his father, Clinton. The teenage hockey player was the first overall pick in the 2018 OHL Draft and went on to win the OHL Rookie of the Year as well as the CHL Rookie of the Year titles. In the 2018–19 season, he put up 29 goals and 61 points in 64 games.

The youngster also won a gold medal for his nation at the 2020 World Junior Championships held in the Czech Republic and contributed with one assist in seven games.
