NHL’s greatest trophy the Stanley Cup is coveted by all teams but only 16 of them can compete against each other in an adrenaline-rushed event. Following regular-season games where 32 teams compete, 16 are selected based on their performance for the Cup contention.
Unfortunately, this season two popular NHL teams got cut off as fans expressed their distress on social media. Sidney Crosby led Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals led by Alex Ovechkin got out of Cup contention even before the race began.
To date, the Penguins carry the most wins (5) compared to the Capitals who won the Stanley Cup once back in 2018. Even then the Stanley Cup crown undoubtedly goes to Montreal Canadiens who has time and again won the trophy relentlessly over the years. The franchise celebrated its Cup victory 24 times, the most in NHL.
Top 3 NHL teams with the most Stanley Cup victories
Montreal Canadiens – 24
From 1915 to 2022, the Montreal Canadiens hold the most Stanley Cup wins record. The Habs have bagged 5 back-to-back Stanley Cups from 1956-60. Not only that, the team won 23 records after Nationa Hockey League was established and 1 prior to that. It’s a record no NHL teams can break at least for a good few years.
Toronto Maple Leafs – 13
The Toronto Maple Leafs have won the Stanley Cup 13 times, the 2nd most in NHL. The team also has the most Hall of Fame players inducted than any other National Hockey League team. This 2023 season, they defeated Tampa Bay Lightning to advance to the 2nd-round series, the first in 19 years.
Although the team lost Game 1 against Vegas Golden Knights, they are prepared to tie the record in their next game. Maple Leafs’ top players, Leon Draisaitl, and Connor McDavid have confidently stated they are ready to face VGK and take the game back to their home ice.
Detroit Red Wings – 11
The Detroit Red Wings stand in third place with 11 wins so far. Following the Red Wings, the other NHL teams have won the Stanley Cup 1-6 times, giving the team a huge lead over its competitors. They’ll most likely sit in the Top 3 position for quite a while. Four of their 11 wins can be crowned to Steve Yzerman, who served as the Red Wings’ longest-tenured captain.
Where does 2022 Stanley Cup champions Colorado Avalanche rank?
Counting last year’s Stanley Cup victory, the Colorado Avalanche has a total of 3 Cups to their name. The reigning Stanley Cup champions were forced an early exit following a 1st-round series loss against Seattle Kraken. The team has been without their captain Gabriel Landeskog and missed out on several players on injury.
Who are the NHL favorites to win the 2023 Stanley Cup?
Following the 2022-23 season performance, the Boston Bruins were considered NHL favorites to win the Stanley Cup this year. Unfortunately, the team got wiped out by the Florida Panthers with a 3-4 record. After their exit, the Maple Leafs became NHL favorites.
Their performance so far has been excellent considering last year’s status. Fans are eagerly waiting for their team to celebrate Cup victory once again this time. As of now, the Florida Panthers are leading with a 2-0 record.
