The battle of Alberta is known to be the most gruesome and fierce battle, the sport of hockey has ever witnessed. Ever since the Atlanta Flames made way to Calgary in 1980 and became the Calgary Flames, the team has played host to some of the most intense NHL games in the past. One might suggest that the level and standard of the sport in Alberta might have taken a toll since the 1980s, the rivalry between Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers has produced some of the best actions on the pitch.
Moreover, the add flame to fire in this fierce rivalry, the ongoing feud of Matthew Tkachuk and Zach Kassian has seen them lock horns four time in the recent 10 months, has surely re-ignited the hatred between Flames and Oilers’ fans once again. The Battle of Alberta: Regular Season Awards
Research carried out by Betway Insider suggests, while many will be aware that Oilers has the upper hand since the late 80s against the city rivals. Yet Flames lead the scoring chart in the regular season. To talk about precise facts, Calgary Flames has won 126 times against Edmonton, dropping 103 games in regulation and six games in overtime. On the other hand, Edmonton holds 109 wins over Calgary, with 126 losses – 117 coming in regulation and nine in OT.
The Calgary Flames have won more than 50 times (54) in Edmonton, while the Oilers have emerged victorious 45 times in Calgary. Furthermore, the former team have found the net 862 times, which is more than the number of their opponent in the battle of Alberta.
That being said, apart from the rich history of both these teams in the late 80s, they haven’t been able to taste success in the recent three decades, after consecutive unsuccessful Stanley Cup Finals cup.
The famous Oilers dynasty of the 1980s claimed five Stanley Cup wins between 1983-84 and 1989-90, a run which few teams in NHL history can match.
On the same note, Oilers is yet to win another championship, those five titles make them the sixth most successful franchise ever. The Calgary Flames did manage to break the Edmonton Oilers dominance for a season as they won the Stanley Cup in 1988-89, yet that remains their only championship to date.

Calgary Flames vs Edmonton Oilers: What does the future indicate?
All NHL and Hockey fans will be aware, that if Flames hold the edge in the regular season, it is the Oilers who have turned up big as in when they were required. With both teams not being able to strengthen the position of their side after illustrious runs in the 80s, it has led to a dampening in the intensity of the rivalry. However, things do seem to be heading in the right direction in Alberta.
Having said that, with Oilers having tied down the biggest talent till 2026, Flames have a reletavely young and in-experienced team. The rivalry itself has also been recently reignited by the Tkachuk-Kassian brawl, with meetings between these sides having a real edge to them once again. Safe to say, every Hockey fan will be hoping to witness the same intensity in the 254th regular season battle of Alberta.
