“Unveil(ing) the coaching staff” – Kori Cheverie as an assistant coach to lead the Canadian men’s U-18 team

Nolan Baumgartner has been chosen as the head coach for Canada’s team at the upcoming U-18 men’s World Hockey Championship, along with Kori Cheverie, Todd Miller, and David Struch as assistants, joined by goaltending consultant Brad Kirkwood. 

Kori Cheverie will be the 1st woman to coach a men’s national team for Canada. Considering her previous portfolio she has been chosen as an assistant at the 2022 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. 

Earlier Kori Cheverie was an assistant for Canada’s women’s team which won the gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She also served as an assistant for the men’s hockey team at Ryerson University in Toronto from 2016 to 2021.

The tournament will be held in Landshut and Kaufbeuren, as stated on nhl.com. Prior to Cheverie’s coaching career, she played 6 seasons as a forward with Toronto of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. On the other hand, the head coach Baumgartner is a former NHL defenseman and a former assistant with the Vancouver Canucks. 

Baumgartner also coached at the 2022 Olympics. Hockey Canada Senior Vice President of hockey operations Scott Salmond said,

“We are excited to unveil the coaching staff that will lead Canada’s national men’s under-18 team as it looks to defend last year’s gold medal,” “We are fortunate to have a diverse and experienced coaching staff that includes Nolan’s NHL and Olympic experience, Kori’s gold medal pedigree with Canada’s women’s Olympic team and national women’s under-18 team, veteran CHL experience from both Todd and David, and Brad’s extensive background at the U SPORTS, WHL and Olympic levels.”

Canada the defending champion will open the game with their very best team with a Group A game against the United States. Aside from Canada, the Czech Republic and Germany are also in Group A. While in Group B Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and Latvia are listed.
