1984 – 1988 Wayne Gretzky lifts Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cup Championships
Wayne Gretzky’s WHA fame carried itself into his NHL career. His puck-moving and goal-scoring technique earned him several trophies. In his first Stanley Cup playoff game, he had 5 assists against Montreal Canadiens in 1981.
In 1983 the Edmonton Oilers led by Wayne Gretzky once again reached the playoff finals. Unfortunately, they were obliterated by 3-time defending champions NY Islanders. Nevertheless, their experience paid off the following season, as Oilers snatched Cup victory for the first time in a while.
Additionally, he led the team to win three more Championship titles in the following years 1985, 1987, and 1988. ‘The Great One’ was named as an officer of the Order of Canada on 25 June 1984. He was awarded for his outstanding performance in the game of ice hockey.
Former NHLer Ken Dryden talked about Gretzky’s form of play noting, “Gretzky reversed that. He knew he wasn’t big enough, strong enough, or even fast enough to do what he wanted to do if others focused on him.”
“Like a magician, he had to direct attention elsewhere, to his four teammates on the ice with him, to create the momentary distraction in order to move unnoticed into the open ice where size and strength didn’t matter.”
“… Gretzky made his opponents compete with five players, not one, and he made his teammates full partners to the game. He made them skate to his level and pass and finish up to his level or they would be embarrassed.”
He was traded from Oilers to LA Kings where Gretzky led the team to their 1st Stanley Cup playoff finals. Kings faced the Oilers but Gretzky led LA to win over his former team but were swept by Calgary Flames instead.
After being sidelined for a long time during the 1992-93 season, Gretzky led the Kings to their first-time playoff finals in their franchise. Unfortunately, the team lost against the Canadiens in Game 5 with a score of 4-1.
