Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Nick Castellanos went off on Tampa Bay Rays Edwin Uceta after the pitcher hit him with a 96.2 mph sinker during the eighth inning. Whether the hit was intentional or not isn’t confirmed yet, but the Rays pitcher claimed it was unintentional.
Regardless, Uceta was suspended for three games and had to give an undisclosed fine. Team manager Kevin Cash also received a one-game suspension and a fine as a result of Uceta’s actions.
The incident immediately led to bench-clearing from both dugouts as fans got fired up over Edwin Uceta’s actions. The 26-year-old claimed he was trying to for a changeup and accidentally hit Nick Castellanos near his left hip.
It was not intentional. I was trying to work inside with my fastball – which is what I hit him with – to set up my changeup.Edwin Uceta as per Adam Berry of MLB.
Castenallos was undoubtedly upset about the whole situation. During the postgame conference, he noted,
I mean, you’re throwing a baseball over 90 mph. You’re frustrated and you’re going to throw at somebody. That’s like my 2-year-old throwing a fit because I take away his dessert before he’s finished.Nick Castellanos as per Adam Berry of MLB.
All three people involved in this incident spoke about how they wanted to move on and focus on the last few games of the regular season. Uceta’s suspension was later reduced to two games and he is expected to be back for Friday’s game in Cleveland.
Bryce Harper on Edwin Uceta hitting Nick Castellanos
Nick Castellanos’ reaction after Edwin Uceta hit him with the fastball was very evident. Even the fans shouted out and players from both dugouts came onto the field. However, Bryce Harper who was already on the base, came towards Uceta, shouting at the pitcher with no real fight.
Rays shortstop Jose Caballero intervened in time to stop Harper from advancing any further as the umpire ejected Uceta from the game. During the exchange, he said,
That’s not the game that we play, man. It shouldn’t be. Guys throw too hard nowadays. You’re getting mad because a guy hits a homer off you and you blow the lead, walk the guy and come out of the game. The situation, the whole thing, just really fired me up, really upset me. Just not something you should accept as a Major League Baseball.Bryce Harper as per Jose Mistretta of ClutchPoints.

Jose Caballero later said that he wanted to stop Harper from having a faceoff against Uceta to “avoid a mess” and stop the situation from worsening. Rays manager Kevin Cash later apologized to Castellanos for the incident.
