Nick Dunlap honored his Alabama golf squad after winning the Barracuda Championship on the PGA Tour. The 20-year-old sophomore became the first PGA Tour golfer to win both professional and amateur events in the same season.
Dunlap won the Barracuda Championship under the modified Stableford scoring system, which rewards points for birdies and eagles while deducting points for bogeys or worse. He took the lead with a key 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th hole. The young sensation lauded his team after winning the tournament.
It's kind of neat. (Laughing). It's really cool. Yeah, I never thought that I would have my name next to that, but it's definitely an honor. It's been a little tough after AmEx. You know, you kind of lose a little bit of confidence and wonder if you can do it again. I truly have the greatest team and they support me, they believe in me, they push me, and they're the reason that I'm here.Nick Dunlap via interview at the Barracuda Championship
Nick Dunlap won the 2024 Barracuda Championship, taking home $720,000 from the $4 million total. Vince Whaley finished second, earning $436,000. The Barracuda Championship is the only PGA Tour tournament to employ the Modified Stableford scoring system, in which the highest score wins.
Points are granted depending on the number of strokes used on each hole, with bonuses for birdies, eagles, and double eagles. The winner will also get 300 FedExCup points, 3,000 Race to Dubai points, and 27.34363 Official World Golf Rankings points.
The Barracuda Championship gives lesser-known golfers the opportunity to win a two-year PGA Tour exemption and a position in the season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Nick Dunlap at the APEX Championship
Nick Dunlap made news in the APEX Championship after reaching a record milestone. At the age of 20, he became the first golfer to win both an amateur and a professional competition on the PGA Tour in the same season.
Earlier this year, Dunlap won as an amateur at The American Express. He became professional soon after the triumph. His most recent success came at the Barracuda Championship, where he finished first with 49 points.
Dunlap made six birdies and a critical eagle putt on the 15th hole. He concluded with a bogey-free round, demonstrating his ability and persistence. His triumph pushed him up the standings from 95th to 63rd position. As such, Dunlap remains a prospect to watch out for.
